Do you think Rebecca Black deserves this much criticism? Or would you rather not make a big deal out of it?
I think the issue with Black’s video is not necessarily her song. I think it has become somewhat of a cultural practice for everyone to assert superiority over what they deem to be an inferior person or thing or whatever; and I think this is a necessary support for a culture of egoism: In a place where everyone is concerned with how great they must appear, at the same time they are guilty of not being great enough, and they take this out on fairly random things.
What matters now is not the fact that Black’s song was awful—and don’t get me wrong, it was, but there are lots of other and perhaps even more awful songs—what matters is that if you do not participate in this persecution, you will be the idiot who cannot see the king’s garments and you will miss out on the ego-boosting effects of berating a teenager who did nothing wrong but sing.
